Meatiest Montana guide book on the market

There are something like eight guide books currently in print for fly fishing in Montana. Many, however, cover only the big-name rivers, giving a "guide's" perspective and tips, which is wonderful. Do you believe in stream access?

Excellent news was handed down from the Montana Supreme Court on Monday, as they ruled that the embattled Mitchell Slough is in fact a natural waterway (albeit altered by irrigators) and the public has the right to fish within the high-water mark. In 2006, a Montana district court judge ruled that it was no longer a natural waterway since years of irrigation work had been done on it.

A huge thank you to the Bitterroot Valley folks who fought hard for this right. Anglers worldwide will benefit from the precedents that these stream-access rulings set.

Huey Lewis and Charles Schwab (et al) will now have to follow the same rules the rest of Montana's riverside landowners follow. Closed circuit to Lewis/Schwab et al: Not sayin'/just sayin', but Colorado's stream access law is much more accomodating to your beliefs/attitudes/values.

We're most of the way done on the Flyfisher's Guide to the Texas Coast, and we will soon begin the Flyfisher's Guide to Salmon and Steelhead, Northern California.
It really makes me want to give saltwater fly rodding a shot. Someday .... in the mean time I'll just have to settle for the rivers of Montana.

Late season

Seems like everything is a couple/three weeks behind, fishing wise this year. That might explain why the browns haven't started chasing streamers very much yet. But good things come to those who wait, so anglers shall be rewarded shortly. This weekend is supposed to have highs in the 40s and snow/rain - I am starting to shake just thinking about it. Should be good, unless the weather forecasters keep playing jokes on me. Baetis, zonkers and buggers will be the flies du jour. Here's to the fall.

...are feeling amorous, and they don't like it when baitfish disturb them during their special time. So it's time to throw some baitfish patterns at them. Get a Bugger near a big brown and you've got good odds of drawing a strike. Put your 6x away - this is 3x-at-best territory.

Cooler nights and cooler days ...

... makes the hopper fishing slow down. But there's still some to be done. Last night's low was in the mid-30's, so that isn't going to help at all. And Monday, Labor Day, looks to be rainy and low-70s for a high, so it really feels like autumn is pushing its way in early. Not that autumn is bad for fishing (quite the opposite), but it does mean that winter is also getting closer. So let's go toss some hoppers while we can!

While it's good for the health of the natural resources, I'm getting a little sick of it. Even the tailwaters aren't fishing good, because the linked reservoirs are getting so full that they need release water into rivers below and it really puts the fish off. Might have to dole out some money for the spring creeks, or find some free ones. On the bright side, it looks like it should be a great year for attractor dries. Check out this article by Professor Dan at Beartooth Flyfishing, regarding the effect of high water and low water on that year's hatches. I found it enlightening.

Relaxing?

I don't know where fly fishing gets this reputation as being relaxing - I am stressed. Rat Lake? Cliff/Wade lakes? Hebgen? Yellowstone (the park, not the river)? Dailey Lake? Harrison Lake? Big Spring Creek? Beaverhead? Poindexter? Lower Madison? ....
And most of the fishable water is blown out. I can only imagine my stress level when it all clears up. You call that relaxing? Ok, maybe it's not exactly being on the floor at Wall Street, but it's no picnic. It's a tough life for a dedicated fisherman, but somehow I'll find a way to manage.

Holy buckets, the rivers are rising. The Gallatin and Yellowstone rivers are about over their banks, and the Madison is not cooperating (the upper is mud and the constantly rising flows on the lower are keeping fish off the feed). However, there are many lakes that are starting to thaw and are fishing very well. The toughest part can be getting to them.

Well, the local freestones are pretty well blown out by now. No Mother's Day Hatch on the Yellowstone once again. The Big Hole is blasting. The Gallatin is thick and brown.
On the bright side, that will give us plenty of time to work on our river maps. Wilderness Adventures Press is creating a series of individual river maps. They include a hatch chart, river description, recommended flies, fishing access points (with GPS coordinates), land use, roads and everything else you'll need to get you on some trouts.
